One of the best (and most challenging) parts of the public relations industry is the ever-changing ideas, methods and platforms for which to best place your client for effective and rewarding results. Whether it’s traditional media, new media, mobile or social media, the landscape is constantly morphing, allowing (good) PR pros to monitor and even create the next big wave.
A favorite trend the Belle team has been monitoring and putting into action for a number of clients is how to best to use the captive audiences of Instagram with takeovers. As an entirely visual medium, Instagram allows us to showcase client products, news and culture in a fun engaging way. Opportunities abound in IG for takeovers – whether accounts host takeovers once a week (Takeover Tuesdays) or choose to use dedicated takeover accounts (e.g. LiveColumbus).
While takeovers are not a new concept in the world of blogging and social media, the scrolling setup of Instagram allows for account followers to see multiple takeover posts – which means the potential for a lot of views. So, how do you make the most out of an Instagram takeover?
3 Tips for a Successful Instagram Takeover
Plan Ahead
What are you hoping to achieve with the takeover? Is this a brand new audience or your target audience? Is there a reason why you chose this day to take over the account (event, anniversary, etc.)? These are the important questions to ask and know beforehand. While takeovers can be spontaneous when it comes to the photos, you should have a plan and a goal in mind. So, ask yourself: Why do the followers on this account care about you taking over the account, and how can you best interest them in your own company or client?
Invest in Good Photos
This is the lifeblood of Instagram. No one is going to stop to read the description of a photo with bad lighting or that doesn’t look appealing. This isn’t to say that you need every photo to be professional, but pay attention to things like lighting and composition, and take a few shots so you have options to choose from. Here are some helpful tips from Quartz on how to take better Instagram pics.
Follow Up
You thought just because you weren’t pitching that you didn’t need to follow up? Think again! If people commented on the photos in your takeover or asked questions, make sure to respond to them with your own account! Follow back those that favorited your posts to encourage more interaction from your own account.
By following these three easy tips to a successful Instagram takeover, you’re sure to see big results, more interactions and a wonderful story.
