5 Reasons Everyone Needs a PR Friend

There’s no greater friendship than with a fearless soul in the field of public relations. We spend our days communicating with clients and journalists, spitting out new ideas, creating partnerships and executing successful events. PR Friend

There’s no greater friendship than with a fearless soul in the field of public relations. We spend our days communicating with clients and journalists, spitting out new ideas, creating partnerships and executing successful events. At the end of the day we go home (read: happy hour) to our loved ones and our jobs don’t really end. Throughout our careers we’ve amassed a toolbox full of tips, tricks and yes, PR magic that is invaluable to our friends. We all know this to be true: PR professionals make the best of friends, and here’s why.

*Special note: there are definitely more than five reasons but we figured we’d keep this short and sweet.

1. We Know How To Communicate

Whether it’s giving advice or being a listening ear, PR friends are great at both. We spend our days communicating – which includes everything from calming our clients down on the phone to serving our best pitches via email. Despite the amount of work we have, we’re able to get on Gchat or Facebook Messenger with our friends and provide the perfect sounding board for their work anecdotes, sibling rivalries, relationship woes or just to share jokes. More than anything, because we’re in PR, we can easily switch from one conversation box to the next with ease and keep up with everyone’s stories. Did I mention PR friends always have the right answer?

2. We Handle Things

You already know there’s an Olivia Pope reference brewing here – because you have great taste in TV … and you have a PR friend. We’re probably the best that ever did it when it comes to handling any crisis thrown our way. We keep calm and carry on when the people around us can’t, because we’ve been trained to keep a level head and think through multiple sides of a situation. Not only can we effectively calm things down in a normal (or amazingly boss) tone but we often end up making the best of friends with the formerly angry parties.

3. We Know Someone Who Knows Someone

Ever needed a last minute party invitation? Or wondered who owns the new club in the city? Or needed a restaurant, brunch or birthday venue suggestion? Even better, if you’re in PR too, ever wanted to know the perfect editor to pitch who actually responds to their emails? I bet your PR friend knows someone who knows someone and probably has all the right answers. Frankly, it’s our job to know a ridiculous number of people in various industries and when we make a call they often get answered. Keep in mind we’ve also accumulated enough favors under our sleeves that your wish will likely get granted.

4. We Multi-Task Like A Boss

Have you ever noticed your PR friend is usually listening to your story, commenting on an Instagram post and responding to a frantic client – all at the same time? This may be a slight symptom of a technology overload and can also be described as rude, but somehow and some way, they still respond to whatever question you asked them? We bet they can also repeat your story. It’s innate frankly, there’s no other way to explain it. We have PR brain and trust us, it works in your favor.

5. We’re Always There To Cheer You On

It is at our very core to promote and support people. We promote our clients daily, gloat about contract wins and awards and of course happy dance about media HITs enough that we can spread the wealth. We’re always on hand to give the biggest congratulations, talk you up in a conversation and even bring you the best and most creative gifts. Having a PR friend on your side means you have your own personal cheerleader – and it’s genuine.
