Startup PR: How to Get PR Coverage in 5 Steps

In this series, we break down the media relations process into the following topics:

  1. Research
  2. The Pitch
  3. Follow Up
  4. Securing Coverage
  5. Working an Opportunity

In each of the above videos, I share tactics that we use as an agency everyday. Of course, each tactic is open to your unique personality and perspective. These videos are meant to provide you with guidelines as you navigate the wild, wonderful world of media relations.

How to Secure PR Coverage (Pt. 4 of 5) Video

How to Secure PR Coverage Part 4 Belle CommunicationsToday we’re talking about how to secure an opportunity. This is where the rubber meets the road so buckle up and get ready to adapt to whatever environment you may encounter when interacting with a given media member.

In my experience, although pitching begins within email, it often leads to a phone conversation before securing an opportunity for coverage. Having a voice-to-voice discussion is very different than the controlled format (and comfort) that email provides. Before you hop on the phone, keep the following in mind:

  1. Are you contacting them at the right time?
  2. Do you know what you’re pitching and why it relates to the person you’re calling?
  3. Do you have an alternative idea to pitch in case you get turned down?
  4. What will you say *if* they say no?
  5. What will you say *when* they say yes?

I discuss each of the above points in detail within today’s video.

Now, get ready for a high like you’ve never felt before …

They said YES (!!!) … Now what?!

Watch as I talk about what to keep in mind immediately after getting that big exhilarating YES response and how to keep control and lock-down an opportunity to the best of your ability …

Then, next week, we’ll embark on the final video in this series about how to work a secured opportunity, including:

  • How to prepare yourself or your client for an interview
  • How to keep an opportunity from falling through
  • How to re-work an opportunity …
